Resolution on free land for housing from Hulhumale’ rejected
People’s Majlis rejected a resolution proposed in accordance with the section 68(e) of the Rules of Procedure by Ga atoll Abdulla Jabir, at its 3rd sitting of the 3rd session held yesterday morning.
The resolution proposed by MP Jabir called for provision of land from Hulhumale’ for residential housing at no cost. The resolution states that all citizens are equal under the law, and as such land from Hulhumale’ should be issued be free to the citizens in the same manner as land from all other parts of the country. The resolution also expresses that article 23 of the constitution provides the right of shelter and clothing to all citizens.
When the floor was opened for discussion, 17 members including the proposer also spoke on the subject. At the conclusion of the debate, a vote was taken to ascertain whether it is accepted or rejected by the Majlis and it was rejected.
Speaking in support of the resolution MP for Male’ atoll Maria Ahmed Didi said that government instead of spending money on unwanted projects should facilitate adequate housing to all Maldivian citizens. She said the issue should be addressed as a matter of priority.
President’s member Ahmed Zahir said the resolution should be submitted after necessary evaluations and studies in the form a bill.
Speaking in support of the bill, MP for Male’ Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) said difficulties in obtaining adequate shelter are the most pressing problem faced with the Maldivian people. He noted that government has so far failed to address the issue adequately.
President’s member Mohamed Saleem debating on the resolution agreed that there are issues in the government that needs to be addressed and that housing was one of them that needs urgent and prompt action.
Speaking at yesterday’s sitting Gdh atoll member Abass Ibrahim stated that Laamu atoll Reeco Moosa Manik has a proven debt and as such not qualified to be a Member of the Majlis.
President’s member Abdul Rasheed Nafiz, by taking a point of order, called on the chair to take the matter to Supreme Court for verification. However the chair repeatedly said it is not the chair’s responsibility to verify that.
Thaa MP Mohamed Shareef , taking a point of order , expressed that Laamu MP Moosa Manik should not stay in Majlis chambers as the chair has not said that he was a member.
After series of points of orders, the chair reminded that any discussion which may affect the good name and dignity of a member was against the Rules of procedures. Further Gdh member Abass Ibrahim took back his words and apologized to Laamu MP Moosa Manik.
