JP MP Jabir calls for free housing

MP for Ga atoll and key member of Jumhoory Party (JP) calling on the government to provide free housing from Hulhumale’ has submitted a resolution to the parliament.

The resolution submitted by Jabir states that government instead of facilitating the basic services required for the people is selling land on a commercial basis and purchasing land for housing is a major social issue faced with the people.

“Due to difficulties in building homes caused by increased prices of construction materials, considerable number of citizens are living in unacceptable conditions” the resolution said.

The resolution also stated that due to severe housing shortage and due to the unacceptable living conditions the people are forced to accept, the society is facing a severe escalation of social problems.

Jabir’s resolution notes that as all citizens are equal under the law and access to housing is a basic right guaranteed under the constitution, the parliament must endorse the resolution.

This resolution is being submitted to be debated on by the members of the Majlis and eventually adopted by the Majlis, as per article clause (b) of article 67 of Majlis Standing Orders and as the right to adequate clothing and shelter is a fundamental right of every citizen guaranteed under the constitution.

Jabir speaking at the first national conference of JP has promised to provide free housing in a JP government.
