Foreign judges vital for Supreme Court -MDP

Chairperson of the main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Maria Ahmed Didi has said that the services of two foreign judges are vital during the initial stages of the Supreme Court to be established under the constitution ratified on the 7 th of last month. She made the statement speaking at a news conference held at MDP Haruge yesterday.

Maria said when establishing a Supreme Court bitter experiences of the past must be taken in to account. She also said things in the past have not always been either fair or just and that this fact must be accepted. Maria said the services of 2 foreign judges with experience in Islamic common law are essential during the initial phase of the Supreme Court. She said this will provide Maldivian judges with valuable experiences as well as help gain confidence and trust of the people as a just and impartial institution.

She said she does not believe locals Judges are well versed in Islamic Sharia or have necessary experiences desired of a Supreme Court judge. She said even though a consensus on the matter may not be forthcoming it is the MDP’s stand.

She we do not always look for solutions in Maldives only, and if there are other better ways of maintaining justice and order under principles of Sharia, then such systems should be embraced.

MDP Chairperson Maria said this will only increase the public confidence in the system and experiences in the past have proved people have no trust or confidence in the judicial system.

Speaking at the news conference MDP parliamentary group leader MP for Thaa atoll Hassan Afeef said that people have no confidence in any of the Judges or magistrates administering justice today and that in order to regain public confidence and trust, foreign assistance is essential.

Sheikh Hussain Rasheed Ahmed leader of Adhaalath Party in a news conference held at Fansavees / Dharubaaruge earlier has said that his party will not accept to having foreign judges in the Supreme Court and that such a notion was not acceptable to the party.
