Commonwealth Election observers deployed in atolls
The observers sent by the Commonwealth to oversee the country’s first ever multi-party elections have been deployed to the atolls.
According to press release issued by the eight-member observer group who will monitor the elections to be held on Wednesday, they will be monitoring the voting process in at least nine atolls.
The press release quoted the leader of the observers’ team, former Prime Minister of Barbados Owen Arthur, as saying that the observer team would be meeting with the officials in charge of the voting in the atolls in addition to the election officials. According to the press release, Arthur said that the team would also meet with the observers appointed by the presidential candidates and political parties.
The observers would monitor the voting process, vote counting and would be active until the results of the voting was announced in Male’, the press release said.
“The observers would be very closely monitoring the elections,” Arthur said in the press release. “We will also be monitoring the vote counting in Male’, and how the results are announced. This is very important to ensure that everything about the elections is done transparently.”
